BEST TIME TO CHASE WATERFALLS IN BALI
Bali lies close to the equator so its tropical climate makes it an ultimate dream destination to visit but not understanding the weather condition of Bali can ruin your vacation. Bali experience 2 seasons: Wet season and Dry season so summer and winter aren’t really a thing but it does get cold in the hilly regions of Bali.
The wet season is good for waterfall flow but it is not ideal to visit Bali during the wet season as the humidity and precipitation are too much and the waterfalls are mucky. During the monsoon, some waterfalls can also become inaccessible and dangerous to visit.
Considering the fact that most waterfalls are located in Ubud and in the northern region of Bali, the dry season, between April and October is the best to time chase waterfalls because of the best possible weather conditions and overall access.
BALI WATERFALLS MAP
Here is a map to keep the waterfalls mentioned in this article handy. You can save this map on your Google Map app by clicking the bracket in the upper right corner.
BEST WATERFALLS IN BALI
Most of the popular waterfalls are located in Ubud but there are also some hidden waterfalls in Bali, most of which are located in and around Munduk. With countless options of waterfalls in Bali, it can become tough to decide which ones to visit so here is a list of must-see waterfalls in Bali.
1. Nungnung Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 10,000 IDR
- Opening Times – 9 AM – 4 PM
- How to get there – 1 hr from both Munduk and Ubud
- Can you Swim? Yes, but I wouldn’t recommend going too close as it’s a very powerful waterfall and can be dangerous.
- Location on Google Maps: Nungnung Waterfall
Located perfectly between Ubud and Bedugul, Nungnung Waterfall also known as Air Terjun Nungnung is a wild and powerful waterfall that gives you a feeling of being in a jungle movie. Surrounded by lush vegetation and cascading 165 ft (50 meters), it is one of the waterfalls in Bali with the highest altitude. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that it is also one of the best waterfalls in Bali yet somehow it’s still relatively unknown by mass tourism.
As you arrive, park your scooter or car at the Nung Nung Waterfall car park which is free, and right next to the parking is the ticket counter for the entrance fee to access the waterfall. Getting to the start of the Nungnung Waterfall is only half the adventure as the real journey begins now. To reach the bottom of the waterfall you have to walk down (and walk back up) 500 steep steps that aren’t a joke. I recommend taking your time, wearing sturdy shoes and taking some water with you.
If you are not in good physical shape, it would be harder to access the waterfall but not impossible. Though the heat and humidity can make it challenging. As you will get closer to the end of the steps, you would be able to hear the sound of water and as you reach the end, you will be rewarded with the sight of this incredible Bali waterfall.
I recommend not getting close to the base of the falls as the sheer power of Nungnung is pretty obvious as you lay your eyes at it. It is highly dangerous and you can suffer serious injuries. The best part about the Nungnung waterfall is that it is highly likely that you won’t have to share its beauty with many. During my visit for over an hour, I only saw 4 other people besides me.
Combine your trip with a visit to the nearby Bali Jhon swing if you are keen on having an experience of Bali swing.
WHERE TO STAY – Bali Eco Village is an eco-resort that is located just 20 mins away from Nungnung Waterfall and is the closest accommodation. Otherwise, accommodations in Munduk would be a good choice.
2. Banyumala Twin Waterfalls
- Entrance Fee – 30K IDR ($2 USD) and 2K IDR ($0.15 USD) for parking
- Opening Times – 7 AM to 6 PM
- How to get there – Short 30 mins ride from the centre of Munduk
- Can you Swim? Yes
- Location on Google Maps: Banyumala Twin Waterfall
Banyumala twin waterfall is located in the mountain region of Munduk and is a beautiful split waterfall in Bali that plunges down the rock and falls into a pool. The falls are certainly massive and stunning but the flow of the waterfall depends on the time of your visit. The water in the pool is chilly and shallow but good enough for a swim. I recommend wearing water shoes to protect your feet from the pebbles and sharp rocks in the water.
Despite its incredible natural beauty, the Banyumala waterfall doesn’t get much crowded because of the effort it takes to reach the falls so if you are lucky, you could actually have this place to yourself.
Getting to Banyumala Waterfall is an adventure in itself and I wouldn’t recommend taking your scooter down to the point where the hike down the stairs starts as the path is bumpy and extremely narrow. Park your scooter on the main road where there is a sign of Banyumala Car park. From the car park, it’s around a 15-20 minute walk to the waterfall.
WHERE TO STAY – Garuda villa and restaurant is located 10 mins away from the waterfall and is affordable place to stay. If you prefer luxury, Munduk Moding Plantation Resort is the best stay you can find in Munduk.
3. Sekumpul Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – Depends on the option you choose. 20k IDR for viewpoint access and 125K IDR for medium trek.
- Opening Times – 8 AM – 4 PM
- How to get there – 1 hr from Munduk and 35 mins from Singaraja
- Can you Swim? Yes
- Location on Google Maps: Sekumpul Waterfall
Hidden in the lush jungles of Bali, near Singaraja, Sekumpul is the tallest waterfall in Bali (at 260 feet) that is a must-visit and should be on your list. Water cascades from 80m above at a rapid rate, hitting the rocks below with such force that the surrounding area is completely covered in a thick, rain-like mist.
Seeing this waterfall from the viewpoint will make you wonder about how stunning it would look from the bottom and you will be convinced to hike down. The hike down to the Sekumpul waterfall is rather steep and arduous but reaching the bottom and seeing the Sekumpul fall will leave you speechless and in awe.
For visiting Sekumpul waterfall, a guide is mandatory and there are now options to choose from the viewpoint only option, a medium trekking or a long trekking option. For this reason, the prices have substantially increased compared to the prices earlier. The price for the medium trekking is 125K IDR per person, and to access the viewpoint, you need to pay 20K IDR.
You can also go for a small private tour that comprises of Sekumpul waterfall and a visit to Ulun Danu temple.
WHERE TO STAY – Sekumpul accommodation is the closest stay from Sekumpul waterfall. Otherwise, stay in Singaraja for easy access.
4. Leke Leke Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 50,000 IDR
- Opening Times – 7 AM – 5PM
- Getting There – 25 minutes by motorbike from Ubud
- Can you Swim? Yes but the water is shallow
- Location on Google Maps: Leke Leke Waterfall
Hidden deep in the rainforest of Bali, Leke Leke is one of the prettiest waterfalls in Bali that is located in Tabanan Regency. From the ticket counter, you will need to walk through the forest, cross a bamboo bridge for around 20-25 mins to reach this waterfall. The path is easy and mostly flat but can be slippery in some sections so it would be best to wear good sturdy shoes.
Surrounded by lush vegetation a tall, narrow stream of water plummets down into a small and shallow pool that gives Leke Leke a fairytale feeling about it. There is a huge boulder in front of the falls that makes for good photo opportunities. It is best to visit it before 9 am as the space down at the waterfall isn’t much so it can get crowded easily.
Leke Leke waterfall is the most expensive waterfall to visit with its high entrance fee that keeps on increasing. It was a hidden and secret waterfall before it started getting famous on Instagram. One can also enjoy the various installations and swings at the entrance of this waterfall with the jungle in the background.
Right after the ticket booth, on the top of the waterfall, you will find a restaurant, a small shop, and clean toilets, perfect if you want to switch clothes after a swim at the waterfall. Once you enter the path down the waterfall you might come across people selling some coconuts.
WHERE TO STAY – Pondok Nyoman Bedugul is a guesthouse that offers the best and cheapest price near Leke Leke waterfall and is only 8 mins away. Check out other accommodations in Ubud here.
5. Tegenungan Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 15,000 IDR and 5000 IDR for car parking. Motorbikes park for free.
- Opening Times – 6.30 AM to 6.30 PM
- Getting There – 20-25 minutes by motorbike from Ubud
- Can you Swim? Yes
- Location on Google Maps: Tegenungan Waterfall
Tegenungan Waterfall or as I like to call it, Ubud waterfall, is a popular tourist attraction in Bali, especially for people staying in Ubud as it is located less than 30 mins from Ubud and is one of the easiest to access. It is the kind of waterfall that is commercialized hence it tends to get VERY crowded. However, in the early morning hours, it is worth visiting to see the beauty of this waterfall.
Tegenungan waterfall is 25 meters high and thunders into a pool. The waterfall is quite powerful so swimming in the immediate proximity of the waterfall is dangerous, but there are shallow areas where you can enjoy a dip.
The pathway is well maintained and there are a few shops and restaurants adding to the touristy atmosphere. As you descend towards the waterfall, you’ll find some of the iconic Bali Instagram props – a giant heart, a bamboo nest, and crowd favorite, a swing!
WHERE TO STAY – Gerke house is just 7 mins away from here and is the cheapest accommodation. Check out other accommodations in Ubud here.
6. Tukad Cepung Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 10,000 IDR and parking is free.
- Opening Times – 8 AM – 6 PM
- How to get there – 45 mins by motorbike from Ubud
- Can you Swim? Yes but it is quite shallow
- Location on Google Maps: Tukad Cepung Waterfall
Set inside the cave Tukad Cepung Waterfall is the most unique among the waterfalls in Bali. Unlike other waterfalls, this one doesn’t flow into a river or stream, rather it gently flows down the cliffs and ends in a cave, which makes it such a picturesque set of falls. After arriving at the entrance, you have to walk down the stairs, wade through the shallow creek crossing, walk through a slot canyon to reach the cave, and access the falls.
Tukad Cepung was relatively unknown until a few years ago but due to its exposure on Instagram, it has now become increasingly popular amongst tourists. It is famous for its rays of sunlight shining straight into the cave making it a magical sight to set your eyes on.
Tukad Cepung can get pretty busy during the middle of the day, so it is best to visit them early in the morning preferably before 9 am. During the time of the sunlight hour, there is a big queue with people waiting for their turn to take their perfect Instagram shot.
WHERE TO STAY – D Karang Homestay and D sari Undisan Villa are the cheapest places to stay near Tukad Cepung Waterfall and both of them are only 6 mins away. Check out other accommodations in Ubud here.
7. Kanto Lampo Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 20,000 IDR
- Opening Times – 7 AM – 5 PM
- Getting There – Less than an hour drive by motorbike from Ubud
- Can you Swim? Yes but it’s not deep enough to swim
- Location on Google Maps: Kanto Lampo Waterfall
Kanto Lampo waterfall is 15 meters high, not a classic plunge waterfall, rather the water trickles down the rock and falls into the pool. It is quite small and most crowded during the day as reaching here is the easiest. You just need to hike down some stairs for 5 minutes from the parking area. This waterfall is not far from Tegenungan and Tibumana, so it’s easy to combine all 3 in a single visit.
Kanto Lampo waterfall is best visited during the wet season, or after a heavy downpour, as during the dry season, the water flow can be barely visible. As the waterfall is not too powerful, you can go stand right underneath it or climb the rocks for photo opportunities but be careful as the rocks are slimy.
WHERE TO STAY – The sender pool suites are just 9 mins away from Kanto Lampo waterfall and it’s a great place to stay.
8. Aling Aling Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 10,000 IDR without a guide plus 2,000 to park your scooter
- Opening Times – 8 AM – 6 PM
- Getting There – 15 mins from Singaraja in North
- Can you Swim? Not without a guide
- Location on Google Maps: Aling Aling Waterfall
Located in the north in Singaraja, Aling Aling waterfall is the main waterfall out of the set of 3 waterfalls, other ones are Kroya waterfall and Kember waterfall. There are 2 options to choose from at the ticket counter – With a guide and without a guide. If you love adrenaline then go with a guide because that will give you the option of jumping and swimming in the waterfall, something you can’t do without a guide. You will also be able to do canyoning at Aling Aling with the guide.
If you choose to go with a guide then you will have to decide between short trekking, medium, or long trekking. Half-a-day can be easily spent here doing all the water activities and exploring various waterfalls. The cost for short trekking is 125,000 IDR, the Medium trek is 250,000 IDR and the long trek is 500,000 IDR.
You can also visit 2 of the best waterfalls in Bali together with a group tour: Aling Aling & Gitgit Waterfall.
9. Tibumana Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 10,000 IDR
- Opening Times – 6 AM – 6 PM
- Getting There – 30 minutes by motorbike from Ubud
- Can you Swim? Yes
- Location on Google Maps: Tibumana Waterfall
Even with its very close proximity to Ubud, the Tibumana Waterfall is Bali’s hidden gem (kind of) and a paradise that must be on your Ubud itinerary. It is a picture-perfect waterfall with beautiful jungle surroundings combined with the curtain of water falling down in a straight stream. The path leading to the waterfall is well maintained making it a family-friendly waterfall that is the easiest to reach. Tibumana waterfall is getting popular by the day with wedding shoots happening so I suggest visiting before 8 am.
Relax in the refreshing water and simply enjoy the serenity of the surroundings. There is also a cave behind the waterfall but it is prohibited to go there and can be dangerous with the power of the flow of fall. Goa Rang Reng is another lesser-known waterfall that is located close to the Tibumana waterfall.
WHERE TO STAY – The sender pool suites are just 18 mins away from Tibumana waterfall and it’s a great place to stay.
10. Gitgit Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 15,000 IDR plus 5,000 to park your scooter
- Opening Times – 6.30 AM to 6.30 PM
- Getting There – 25 minutes by motorbike from Ubud
- Can you Swim? Yes
- Location on Google Maps: Gitgit Waterfall
Gitgit or locally referred to as “Air Terjun Gitgit” is another famous waterfall in Bali and one of the most visited because it is one of the easy access waterfalls in Bali. Situated high up in the mountains and surrounded by stunning rice paddies, this 40m vertical cascade thundering into a small river gorge looks like a jungle paradise.
The hike to the waterfall is through a series of paved steps and would take around 15 minutes. The whole walk is surrounded by food and souvenir stalls. At the base of the waterfall, there are toilets and changing facilities too.
Overall, Gitgit is a great Bali waterfall to visit if you’re in the northern part of Bali! There is also a possibility to do canyoning at Gitgit. I recommend combining a visit to Gitgit waterfall with Sekumpul Waterfall and Aling Aling as they all can be done in a day or even half a day if you are based in Lovina or Munduk.
11. Munduk Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 20,000 IDR (1.50 USD) and 2000 IDR for parking
- Opening Times – 8 AM – 5 PM
- Getting There – 5 mins drive from Munduk and 2 hrs from Ubud
- Can you Swim? No as the water isn’t deep
- Location on Google Maps: Munduk Waterfall
Hidden in the mountains of the north, the Munduk waterfall, also known as the Red Coral waterfall is a stream of water cascading down the cliff. The whole place itself is quite small but very romantic. The water at the bottom of the falls is chilled and not deep enough to swim. The hike to the waterfall is a short, easy 10-minute walk from the parking lot and it is actually located on someone’s land.
Operated by a couple of locals, Munduk Waterfall is one of the waterfalls in Bali that is not super popular with tourists, meaning you’ll likely have the whole area to yourself. There is also a toilet and changing area near the entrance.
If you are feeling a little more adventurous then there is a trek called the Munduk Waterfall trek that starts from Melanting cottages and comprise 4 different waterfalls near the town of Munduk – Labuhan Kebo Waterfall, Melanting Waterfall, Munduk Waterfall (also known as Red Coral Waterfall), and finally the Golden Valley Waterfall. Put aside 5-6 hrs to complete the trek and enjoy all the waterfalls.
12. Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall
- Entrance Fee – 30.000 IDR (1.85 USD) and parking costs 2.000 IDR
- Opening Times – 8 AM to 6 PM
- Getting There – 25 mins by motorbike from Munduk
- Can you Swim? Yes
- Location on Google Maps: Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall
Banyu Wana Amertha is a scenic cascading waterfall where several small streams of water cascade down mossy rocks and it’s surrounded by lush vegetation. The area around contains 3 more sister waterfalls including Bhuana Sari Waterfall, all of which are still hidden gems in Bali. It is visited only by a few but the walk to the waterfall is a bit tiring.
All of the 4 waterfalls are 5-10 minutes apart from each other with Banyu Wana Amertha and Bhuana Sari Waterfall on the left side and the other 2 on the right side. It is definitely one of the best waterfalls in Bali that you should visit.
WHERE TO STAY – Garuda villa and restaurant is located 10 mins away from the waterfall and is an affordable place to stay. If you prefer luxury, Munduk Moding Plantation Resort is the best stay you can find in Munduk.
