Kuala Lumpur or KL as it’s fondly called is the capital of Malaysia and a favorite stopover for travelers coming to visit South East Asia. Besides its famous cheap food scene, the city is popular for Petronas Twin Tower and lately has been putting much more effort to draw tourists from all over the world by adding more Instagrammable places in Kuala Lumpur.

Spending around 3 days in the city will give you an ample amount of time to see what this city has to offer. There is no shortage of photography spots in Kuala Lumpur and it is one of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia if you are more of a city person at heart.

Being a hub for travelers Kuala Lumpur provides a great opportunity to travel to some neighboring cities like Singapore, Bali, and Thailand as it is so easy and less time-consuming.

Most Instagrammable Places in Kuala Lumpur

1. Petronas Towers

The one thing that comes to everybody’s mind when thinking of Kuala Lumpur, is Petronas Towers. No trip to Kuala Lumpur is complete without seeing these twin skyscrapers. Once known as the tallest building in the world from 1998 to 2004, now remains the tallest twin tower in the world.

The buildings are a landmark in Kuala Lumpur with 88 floors high tower connected by a sky bridge on the 42nd and 43rd floors. The architecture of Petronas is very unique and it’s made up of concrete, steel, and glass facade. These twin towers are huge and they look magnificent when they light up at night.

Suria KLCC, a 6-storey shopping center is located at the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers. It’s the best shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur city that focuses on luxury brands and foreign goods. The entrance to the inside of Petronas towers and Sky bridge is inside the mall.

SUVARNA’S TIP FOR PHOTOGRAPHY: Apart from the front which undoubtedly is the best view of Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC Park also offers great views. Make sure to take a stroll around it and you will discover so many nice angles to shoot the twin towers.

2. Colorful Stairs at the Batu Caves

One of the most frequently visited attractions in the city both by locals and tourists is Batu Caves. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, Batu caves is a limestone hill that has a cave temple inside. This cave temple is a popular Hindu shrine and to reach the temple, you have to climb 272 steps.

The most fascinating thing about the Batu Caves is the colorful steps. Once a dull and not so full of life temple has now been converted into one of the most Instagrammable places in KL. This place got its makeover in early 2019 and these rainbow stairs are all the rage on Instagram.

While climbing the stairs, beware of the naughty monkeys and don’t feed them.

ENTRANCE FEE: The main cave temple is free to visit however it costs RM 35 to visit the Dark Cave.

SUVARNA’S TIP FOR PHOTOGRAPHY: If you don’t want anyone to be in your pictures then take a Grab (taxi) to reach here before sunrise. Batu Caves opens at 7 am and locals start to come here at around 7:30 am.

You will still get a chance to take pictures before it gets super busy. As this is a place of worship so be respectful and don’t wear a sleeveless and short dress. Remember to cover your shoulder and knees.

3. Thean Hou Temple

One of the most Instagram worthy places in KL and the most gorgeous temple that should be on your list is Thean Hou Temple. It is a six-tiered temple of the Chinese sea goddess Mazu located in Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur).

Sitting atop Robson Heights on Lorong Bellamy, this temple serves both as a place of worship and a place for events such as weddings and can be best reached by Grab. It is one of the oldest and largest temples in South East Asia. The best part about this temple that makes it different and so beautiful is not the architecture but the decoration.

The whole temple is decorated with lanterns and the colors of lanterns may change depending on when you visit. It’s the best place in KL to see and photograph as there is no bad angle to photograph this place. It really is a photographer’s dream and a top amongst the most Instagrammable places in Kuala Lumpur.

4. Street Art in Bukit Bintang

The area of Bukit Bintang is a colorful paradise for people who love street art. Once smelly and dirty, now this place has been transformed into a happy place. If you love street art then definitely don’t miss this area. It’s very pretty and such a hotspot nowadays for being one of the top Instagrammable places in Kuala Lumpur.

The whole neighborhood is filled with attractive murals in the alleys and all of them are in different colors. This region is one of the best for street photography in Kuala Lumpur. Be prepared to walk around if you want to explore many of these murals.

5. Wilayah Mosque

Federal Territory Mosque also known as Wilayah Mosque is a large mosque in Kuala Lumpur built to house up to 17,000 worshipers at a time. The architecture of the mosque is built in a mix of several styles including Turkish, Malay, and Mughal, and the blue color dome looks so stunning.⁣

Wilayah Mosque is not very popular or touristy so it’s rare that you would see a lot of people here. The mosque is free to enter but the entry is through Gate B only. On most of the websites and on google the timing says 8 am but you are actually allowed to visit after 10 am.

Rent your Abaya (free of cost) from the main entrance of gate B and you can enter the mosque. The inside hall of the mosque can only be entered with a guide and you are free to roam the outside of the main hall and click your pictures.

SUVARNA’S TIP FOR PHOTOGRAPHY: The ceiling of the main hall is beautiful and can be photographed using a wide-angle lens. There are many good angles around the mosque to work through.

6. Infinity Pool at the Face Suites

There are many hotels in Kuala Lumpur city centre that offer great views of Petronas Towers but you have to shed a good amount of money to stay in them. However, Face Suites located conveniently about 8 mins away from the city centre is a luxury apartment hotel that offers stunning views of Petronas from its infinity pool without a hole in the pocket.

The rooms are big and comfortable but make sure to book in advance as it’s a popular place for people to stay. The best part about the pool at face suites is that you get views of both Petronas Twin Towers and Menara tower.

SUVARNA’S TIP: Book through Airbnb that way it will be cheaper. Also, be prepared to see a lot of people in the pool even early in the mornings because the pool opens at 7 am.

7. Laman Perdana at Perdana Botanical Garden

Perdana Botanical Gardens formerly known as Perdana Lake Gardens is the oldest and most popular park in Kuala Lumpur. This beautiful 227-acre park not only consists of botanical gardens but also a butterfly park, bird park, Deer Park, and Orchid garden and is huge so it will require at least half a day to explore properly.

A beautiful canopy with a unique structure like a tree called Laman Perdana is located in the middle of the main garden and is a highlight to photograph. The nearby lake is also a good place to have a picnic.

SUVARNA’S TIP: It can get quite hot here so try and go early morning when it opens. This way you will be able to see most of the park in a few hours. Be sure to carry sufficient water with you.

8. Putrajaya Mosque

Did you know that Malaysia has its very own Pink Mosque? Yes, this beautiful Pink mosque in Putrajaya is truly a masterpiece. The pink-domed Putra Mosque is constructed with rose-tinted granite and consists of three main functional areas – the prayer hall, the Sahn, or courtyard, and various learning facilities and function rooms.

The mosque is pretty big and can accommodate 15,000 people at one time. The whole area around the mosque is big and you should walk or rent a bicycle here to roam around the water. Roaming around will give you a beautiful view of the mosque and many angles to click photographs.

Take a tour of the inside of the mosque and be amazed. Visitors are requested to dress respectfully. Female visitors will be directed by the guards towards a robe counter. You really shouldn’t miss this mosque when in Kuala Lumpur.

SUVARNA’S TIP: The most convenient way to visit here is by car so you can book a grab as this is around 35 min outside of the main city. Visit the mosque in the afternoon for a tour and then wait till sunset for magic.

9. Saloma Link Bridge

Saloma Link Bridge is a newly constructed pedestrian and bicyclist bridge that was opened in February 2020. It has become very popular in a short span of time due to its unique design and cool architecture. The bridge is just 69m long but it connects the old and new Kuala Lumpur which was previously connected by a highway.

The construction of this bridge has provided great connectivity and a faster way to commute between the two sides of Kuala Lumpur. At night, it comes to life and looks captivating with the beautiful LED light display.

10. Astaka Morocco

Have you been to Morocco yet? No? Well, no problem. You can find a little slice of Morocco right here in Kuala Lumpur. The list of Instagrammable places in Kuala Lumpur cannot be completed without a mention of Astaka Morocco or Morocco Pavillion which is a beautiful gem in the heart of Putrajaya.

Entering here will give you total Morocco vibes with the beautiful tile work and intricate carvings. Some part of Astaka Morocco is free to visit and you can roam around and take pictures. But the main and the most beautiful area to visit comes with a fee of RM 3 and a strict no camera policy.

The opening hours are from 9 am – 6 pm on most days and it’s closed on Tuesday.

SUVARNA’S TIP: This place can be reached by grab as it’s a little far from the main city or you can visit this first when you come from the airport or in the end on the way to the airport.

11. Elmina Valley Central Park

Elmina Valley Central Park is a recreational park in Shah Alam located about 30 minutes away from the city centre. There are 2 main photo spots at this place, the first is the Elmina Iconic Bridge and the second is the dreamy rainbow walkway.

After the rainbow stairs at Batu caves, this rainbow walkway is a great addition to Instgrammable places in Kuala Lumpur, and the red exterior at Elmina bridge looks eye-catching when it lights up at night. These two are truly great Kuala Lumpur Instagram spots.

12. Sultan Abdul Samad Building

Sultan Abdul Samad Building is a Moorish-style building located in front of KL’s best-known landmark, Dataran Merdeka Square (Independence Square). It was once home to the superior courts of Malaysia but now offices Ministry of Information, and Communications and Culture of Malaysia.

Made entirely of brick, the building’s unique color and architecture make it a fascinating place to photograph. Merdeka Square located in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is a giant field where Malaysia proclaimed its freedom.

13. KL Forest Eco Park

KL Forest Eco Park formerly known as Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is a rainforest in Kuala Lumpur that shows you a different side of the city. It’s hard to believe that there is a rainforest in the middle of the city with several hikes and a forest canopy walkway.

The park is open daily and is free to visitors. All the hikes are suitable for children and easy to do. The canopy walk is a must here.

14. Heli Lounge Bar

One of the most interesting places and a thrilling experience to do in Kuala Lumpur is to visit the Heli Lounge Bar. It’s the coolest place that serves as a helipad during the day and transforms into a bar at night.

It offers a fantastic 360° view of the city and the best time to visit is undoubtedly sunset for those epic colors. To be able to go to the top of the helipad you need to be 18 yrs old and the drinks aren’t cheap either but you pay for the location and the epic views. If you are visiting after 9 PM then you need to be dressed in smart casuals.

15. Kwai Chai Hong KL

Kwai Chai Hong KL is a hidden alley a little further from Petaling street and is the best-kept secret that will take you back in time to the old days of KL Chinatown. The alley has been beautifully transformed into an era from the past with murals depicting the local life of Chinese settlers back then.

There are a lot of aesthetically pleasing cafes near this area so if you are a foodie who loves cafe-hopping then don’t miss visiting this place.

Final Thoughts

Kuala Lumpur is a city that has a lot more to offer other than these Instagrammable places. There are a lot of main tourist attractions that shouldn’t be missed when in Kuala Lumpur.

Also, apart from having some of the best photo spots, it is also food heaven for people who enjoy the local cuisine. The food is cheap in local markets and eating at good restaurants won’t cost much either so make sure to eat as much as you can.

  8. I’d love to go back to Kuala Lumpur, I really enjoyed the city. When I visited in 2013 the stairs at Batu caves were not rainbow coloured and I was terrible at photography anyway so I need to go back and get some Instagram shots! I’ll definitely be using this guide when I do get back there.
